One tip I use to survive a new job is to note down every little work related thing I hear the first few weeks. Each piece of information is a tiny part of a big jigsaw puzzle. I sort, analyze and build a big picture. Assumptions can only take you so far. The key is to confirm the new understanding with a colleague.
